Festivus for the rest of us.
The holidays are all about tradition. Christmas night at the movies, Fifth Ave window-gaping, the Mummers on New Year’s Day, the Nutcracker, trimming the tree, holiday spectaculars, crazed shopping and probably one of the greatest traditions of all, procrastination. For some, it’s Chinese food on Christmas Day to avoid the hassle of cooking and cleaning, or, for the inner-Seinfeldian, engaging in “Feats of Strength” along with the “Airing of Grievances” on December 23rd. But whatever the tradition, it is your own, and probably one you share with family and friends during the holiday season.
We love the holidays (even the inevitable stress that comes with finding that perfect gift) and traditions don’t fall short here. For Christmas, some of our favorites include:
Cookie Baking
Start mid-December and don’t stop ‘til you’ve run out of flour (or sprinkles). Baking is best done while listening to classic artists like Bing, Nat, Ol’ Blue Eyes and of course, Adam Sandler. The record thus far is 12 hours of non-stop baking. No breaks and definitely no mistakes. If they don’t look good, how’re you going to give them away?
Movies
Nothing beats a holiday blockbuster on a sofa near you. To us, it’s just not the holidays without seeing at least three of the following: White Christmas, It’s a Wonderful Life, A Christmas Story, Miracle on 34th Street (1947), The Grinch, Charlie Brown’s Christmas, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Home Alone, Elf, Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged, Nightmare Before Christmas and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. Now, how about that jelly-of-the-month-club membership?
The Feast of the Seven Fishes
If you know anything about Italians, it’s that they like to eat. A lot. This age-old feast (La Vigilia) features at least seven fishes served amongst a bevy of delicious courses to stuff you silly on Christmas Eve. Squid, pulpa (that’s octopus folks), mussels, scallops, clams, shrimp, eel, lobster…just to name a few. The more family around the big table, the better. Just try to get to the pastries before the kiddies start to whine for gifts…
Vaca
As in years past (and hopefully, for many more to come) we will be continuing the UNTUCK tradition of closing shop for the week between Christmas and New Year’s (December 24th to January 1st). So no matter where you are or how you celebrate, have fun, be safe, relax and enjoy the holiday season. Thanks to all for being a part of the UNTUCK family. We look forward to working with you in the new year. Cheers!
