Service in Action
The Situation
The reach of Penn Medicine’s impact extends far beyond the walls of its buildings deep into the communities of the Greater Philadelphia region. Demonstrating this impact through compelling narratives, and compiled into a printed "community report" as evidence, has become an annual tradition for the Penn Medicine communications team. They came to us to help them imagine a digitally-focused way forward.
Our Approach
Taking inspiration from the printed world, we set a course to create an experience that mimicked the exploration, pace, and immersive feel of thumbing through a magazine. This idea then shaped the overall approach, shifting from a historically annual release to a continuously updated digital publication peppered with fresh and relevant stories throughout the year.
We crafted a user interface that selectively displays featured content in tiles at first entry through the home page, followed by an always accessible table of contents menu where every story is presented in one, filterable view. This amassing of stories in their various forms—long-form stories, photo essays, infographics, and videos—gives readers full control over their viewing experience—however, users can also choose to "flip" organically between stories using a linear navigation scheme on each page.
