National Urban League

Democracy in Peril

The National Urban League continues to advance policies and programs to empower African Americans and other urban communities. Its highly-anticipated report, State of Black America, remains a benchmark and source for thought leadership around racial equality in the U.S. In the 47th edition, Democracy In Peril: Confronting the Threat Within, the National Urban League, in partnership with the Southern Poverty Law Center, raises the alarm around the growth of far-right extremism, quantifies the increase in racial violence, and outlines the effects of hateful rhetoric which pose a threat to our political system, our communities, our families, and our nation.

The idea of extremism threatening our democracy and way of life is so alarming that it demands an equally striking visual—the juxtaposition of two of our country’s most powerful and iconic landmarks. Lady Liberty stands for the hope and spirit of our democracy while the burning upended U.S. Capitol serves as a reference to the January 6 insurrection and threats within our government. We continued these stylized photo illustrations throughout the report, in digital promotional social graphics, and on signage for the State of Black America launch event in Atlanta.
